Zinc oxide has the appearance of a white powder and is odourless; if heated, it turns yellow and returns to its natural colour on cooling. Zinc oxide is not soluble in water and ethyl alcohol, while it is soluble in acetic acid and ammonia; it is used in the preparation of cement, in the rubber industry and especially in medicine as an antiseptic for preparing ointments, powders and band-aids.

- Ask for safety data sheet and contact local authorities. Prolonged exposure with zinc oxide may cause irritation to skin with signs of allergic dermatitis. Zinc oxide causes moderate irritation to the eyes on prolonged contact with reversible conjunctiva irritations. Zinc oxide is may cause irritations to the respiratory system and an excessive concentration in the air causes deposits in the nasal canals. If swallowed, zinc oxide causes nausea and spasms of vomiting resulting in intestinal obstructions.
