Lactic acid is a colourless to yellow syrupy liquid which has a tendency to absorb water. Lactic acid is also known as 2 - hydroxypropanoic acid. In nature it is found in milk acid, butter, gastric juices and the brain. It is obtained by lactic fermentation but can also be obtained synthetically.

- Lactic acid is present as a yellowish and clear syrupy liquid.
- Solubility
- Lactic acid mixes with water, alcohol and ether but is insoluble in chloroform and petroleum ether.
- Uses
- Lactic acid is used in the tanning industry and in the food industry to acidulate fruit juices, beer, preserves. 2 - hydroxypropanoic is used in the synthetic resin industry to synthezise polyester resins and is also used in the pharmaceutical industry to prepare esters and salts.
