- Ask for safety data sheet and contact local authorities. The swallowing of large doses of ferric ammonium citrate red can cause tiredness, nausea and vomiting, pain to the upper part of the abdomen, diarrhoea, weak and fast pulse, hypotension, dehydration; acidosis will occur 30-60 minutes after swallowing. Swallowing ferric ammonium citrate may cause cyanosis, pulmonary oedema, convulsions, acidosis, anuria, hypothermia and death with convulsions in 24-48 hours. Necrosis of the liver may also be verified two days after ingestion.
