Cadmium sulphide occurs naturally as a mineral in a crystalline and shapeless form; the shapeless form has a mainly yellow, orange or brown colour. There are various cadmium pigments which are very resistant to heat and alkalis but not very resistant to acids.

- Appearance
- Cadmium sulphide naturally occurs as a mineral; it is found in a crystalline or shapeless form. The shapeless form of cadmium sulphide is yellow, orange or brown.
- Solubility
- Cadmium sulphide is insoluble in water but soluble in cold diluted HCI or sulphuric acid. Cadmium oxide easily decomposes and dissolves in nitric acid which has not been diluted too much. Yellow cadmium is soluble in bases such as NH3.
- Uses
- Cadmium sulphide is a pigment widely used for painting, colouring soap, fabrics and paper. Bright yellow cadmium sulphide is a fluorescent pigment.
