Nickel carbonate occurs as green crystals; it is insoluble in water but somewhat soluble in acids. Nickel carbonate is reduced with hydrogen at a T above 300° to obtain split nickel that is widely used in catalysis.

Nickel carbonate powder can have cancerous effects, although there is still insufficient evidence to prove this; it is harmful if inhaled and swallowed; may cause sensitisation by skin contact; it is very toxic to aquatic organisms any may cause long-term adverse effects in aquatic environments.
