In nature chromium is widely dispersed in the earth's crust. Industries use Chromium in the form of free metal that has a steel-grey colour and in the form of iron - chromium. Chromium is used in the preparation of nickel, cobalt and aluminium based alloys, in the oil industry as a catalyst, in electrical engineering and in the prevention of corrosion. Chromium is irritating to the respiratory system and may cause perforation of the nasal septum and also has a corrosive action on proteins.

- Chromium oxide has the appearance of a green powder whose intensity may vary. Also known as chromium sesquioxide or chromium green, chromium oxide is insoluble in water, acids and alkalis. Chromium green is used in the preparation of porcelain and glass and in the chemical industry as a synthetic intermediate or as a catalyst.
